LA SALLE COUNTY COURTHOUSE

A familiar landmark.
A closer look.

Pause here before exploring town. Look up, take in the building, and give this piece of Cotulla a little time.

Completed in November 1931, Henry Phelps’s design bridges Art Deco and Moderne. Tan brick and terra cotta ornament give the four-story courthouse its distinctive character.

01 · LOOK UP

Details with meaning.

Spread-winged eagles above the entrances carry arrows. The Texas Historical Commission describes them as symbols of freedom, strength, and readiness to defend.

02 · LOOK BACK

A building of firsts.

The courthouse contained the county’s first elevator. Its top floor originally housed the jail.

03 · LOOK CLOSER

Preserved for tomorrow.

The restoration, completed in 2012, repaired masonry, steel windows, terrazzo floors, and vault doors. Entrance doors were recreated using an old photograph.
