Cotulla
remembers.

The cemetery holds a quieter record of the families, losses, and divisions that shaped this community.

According to its Texas Historical Commission marker, Joseph Cotulla first gave land for the cemetery and is buried there. The earliest marked grave dates to 1882. Numerous graves carry the date 1886, when smallpox struck La Salle County.

The marker also records that the cemetery originally had separate Mexican and Anglo-American sections. Read alongside Welhausen’s story, that detail invites reflection on segregation across different parts of community life.

These are places of family remembrance. If you visit, respect mourners, grave markers, and any posted rules.
